DAPPLESTEED

I feel the spray on my face

And the joy in my Dapplesteed

smiling horse

as we gallop up the beach

no saddle, no blanket

only a rein

my bare heels touch his flank

knees gripping

as he pronks

by the

effervescent

surf

this is how freedom should taste

smell the kiss of salt in the air

happiness

kindly sun, breaking waves

a braided mane

come undone in the wind

now we slow

and we walk

back through

the beach-head

sand

Ah, Dapplesteed

more than a horse, equine friend

sharing joy

you give your heart to a girl

no saddle, no blanket

only a rein

I’ll rub you down in your stall

you’ll eat oats.

Tomorrow

we can

have another

ride
